Separating analysis from reporting

Reporting aims to establish what happened; analysis explains why it may matter. Both can be valuable when their roles are clear.

What this looks like

An article may accurately report a vote and then argue that the decision will change an industry. The vote is a fact to verify; the projected effect is analysis to test against other evidence.

The wider picture

A report and an analysis piece can share the same evidence while doing different work. The report should establish an event, its source, and the relevant uncertainty. Analysis can then connect that event to patterns or possible consequences, but those connections remain interpretations. Readers gain more when the distinction is visible: what is documented, what is inferred, and what would change the conclusion.

A practical starting point

Identify the source of factual claims, then notice where interpretation begins. Compare multiple accounts when a topic is contested.

A short exercise

Choose one claim about the topic and trace it back to the earliest available document, recording, or direct statement. Write down what that source actually establishes, then compare two independent explanations of its significance. Mark any inference or uncertainty in a separate line. This short source trail makes it easier to see where a story is solid and where the interpretation still needs testing.

Questions worth asking

  • What is the original source?
  • Which part is confirmed, and which is interpretation?
  • What remains uncertain?

Keep perspective

Opinion should be labeled, and uncertainty should remain visible. A confident tone does not replace evidence.

Use these ideas as a starting point, then check the details that matter in your own situation. A useful decision is one you can explain and revisit as the facts change.
